The Cessna 172RG Cutlass is like the twin brother of the 172 who was born 2 minutes before his sibling and has bragging rights for life.  The Cessna 172RG comes equipped with a larger 180 horsepower engine, retractable gear and a variable pitch, constant speed propeller.

This aircraft is a rare find at a flight school because of the high cost for replacement parts, and the fact that the landing gear doesn’t like to extend on a consistent basis, which can be a problem.  If you’re looking to find a complex aircraft to fly, most schools have upgraded to the more popular Piper Arrow.  For what it’s worth my money is on the RG as the more enjoyable aircraft to fly, compared to the Arrow.  The Arrow is sluggish and handles like a hog, while the RG can keep up with most light twins.
