:: Normal Landing

From ProPilotGuide.com

Objective: To develop proficiency in conducting landings under normal and crosswind conditions.

Standards:

  1. Exhibits knowledge of the elements related to normal and crosswind approaches and landings, including recommended approach angles, airspeeds, V-speeds, configurations, performance, limitations, and related safety factors.
  2. Considers the wind conditions, landing surface, and obstructions.
  3. Selects a suitable touchdown point.
  4. Establishes the recommended approach and landing configuration and adjusts power and altitude as required.
  5. Verifies existing wind conditions, makes proper correction for drift, and maintains a precise ground track that ensures the desired traffic pattern will be flown, taking into account any obstructions and or ATC.
  6. Maintains a stabilized approach and the recommended airspeed with gust correction factor applied, ± 5 knots.
  7. Notes any obstructions or other hazards in the approach path and landing area, and considers landing performance capabilities.
  8. Verifies wind condition and makes positive correction for crosswind maintaining a precise ground track on final approach.
  9. Recognizes and promptly corrects deviations during approach and landing.
  10. Makes smooth, timely and correct control application during the roundout and touchdown.
  11. Remains aware of the possibility of wind shear and/or wake turbulence.
  12. Touches down smoothly at approximately stalling speed, at a specified point at or within 200 feet beyond a specified point with no drift, and with the airplane’s longitudinal axis aligned with and over the runway centerline.
  13. Maintains crosswind correction and directional control throughout the approach and landing.
  14. Completes the prescribed checklist.

PRIVATE
Touches down at or within 400 feet beyond a specified point, with no appreciable drift, and the airplane longitudinal axis aligned with the runway centerline.

COMMERCIAL
Touches down at or within 200 feet beyond a specified point, with no appreciable drift, and the airplane longitudinal axis aligned with the runway centerline.

Description:

  1. Ensure that the Before Landing Checklist is completed.
  2. Complete the appropriate traffic pattern.
  3. Prior to 300’ AGL on final approach, stabilize the airplane with the final flap setting and the prop at high RPM.
  4. Coordinate pitch and power so as to maintain 90 KIAS (until landing is assured) and the desired approach angle that will permit landing within the designated area.
  5. At the appropriate flare attitude, slow the descent by raising the pitch attitude and smoothly reducing power to idle so that the airplane settles onto the runway on the main gear.
  6. Maintain back pressure on the yoke throughout the touchdown and landing roll, so as to hold the nose up off the runway as long as possible.
  7. Slow the airplane to normal taxi speed before leaving the runway centerline.
